New CDL FAQs

What is the minimum age one can qualify for a Montana commercial driver's license?

You must be at least 18 years to qualify for an intrastate CDL and 21 to qualify for an interstate CDL.

What tests do I have to pass before I can qualify for a CDL?
There are several tests that you must pass before you qualify for a CDL. You must pass a physical (including an eye exam), a road test, a written exam, and a pre-trip inspection.

Are these exams by appointment only?
You can take the written exam as long as the testing center is open. You want to show up at least a half an hour before closing, to assure that you have time to take the exam. If you are taking the road test, you need to schedule a time at a state-approved exam site.

CDL Renewal FAQs
Can I renew my CDL through the mail?

That depends. Some counties allow you to renew by mail. Most counties have a Department of Motor Vehicles office where you can go to renew your license.

Am I required to take the CDL exams every time I renew my commercial driver's license?
You are only required to retake the written exam and road test if you do not renew your license on time. You have up to three months after the renewal deadline to renew your CDL.
